The Academy was recently awarded £15,000 by People’s Postcode Trust, a grant-giving charity, funded entirely by players of People’s Postcode Lottery.
The grant meant that we could purchase 6 specialist electric wheelchairs, which will be used by disabled children to play power hockey.
Power hockey offers severely disabled children the opportunity to take part in competitive sport and the unique chair design, complete with ball firing mechanism, has been developed by Greenbank, Jaguar Land Rover and North West Training Council over the past 10 years.
Power Hockey player, Liam Triggs, aged 10 said;
“I love coming to play power hockey at Greenbank every Wednesday. The chairs are really fast and help me to take part in sport, just like other children. I’ve made lots of new friends and it’s really good fun”
Sports Coach James Dixon added
“It’s really important that disabled children get the same opportunities as others to take part in sport and power hockey means that they can. The chairs are expensive to make and we need support to buy them. We really appreciate the help from players of People’s Postcode Lottery for funding another six of them”.
