We are delighted to have secured funding from Big Lottery for our 3 year Empower Project (due to start May 2018), which will support up to 3000 disabled people to achieve improved health and fitness.
The project will take a holistic approach to supporting and empowering disabled people to take full advantage of what Greenbank offers in terms of the outdoors, sport, arts, crafts, training, employment and fitness. This will lead to a healthier and happier disabled community in the Merseyside area.
It will provide individually tailored, flexible programmes that respond to the specific needs and barriers to recreation, employment and training faced by disabled people.
Empower will offer:
- Support
Funding will be used to support disabled people to attend our activities, using support workers and volunteer buddies and will be coordinated by a project development officer.
- Transport & Outreach programme
One of the major barriers to disabled people attending activity sessions is transport to and from our venue. This project includes provision for the purchase of a dedicated minibus, for use by a paid driver and volunteers.
A van for transporting specialist equipment for transporting specialist equipment, such as adaptive cycles, wheelchair sports and electric wheelchair, into local venues will also be purchased.
- Training & employment
The Empower Project will offer courses to develop the skills of disabled people as officials, coaches and administrators. It will also look to use disabled people to run the programme.
- Outdoor Session & Fitness Package
The project will take advantage of our location, next to Sefton Park to offer disabled people and their families an outdoor fitness session (including cycling, jogging and walking) on Sunday mornings.
We also have funding for 100 free annual gym memberships (including circuit sessions) and a healthy eating programme available as part of Empower.
Look out for launch details soon.
